East German Wool Single Hole Balaclava
DDR Style Warmth from yours truly!
The East German wool balaclava was meant to be widely used by military personnel, police officers, and civilians in the Duetsche Democratic Republic (DDR) during the Cold War era. The East German wool balaclava was intended primarily as a means of protection against the harsh winter weather, which could be particularly severe in the northern regions of the country. It protects the entire head and neck, leaving only the eyes, mouth and nose exposed, with the ability to be tucked under the chin to expose your mouth if you need to chow down an MRE. This provided excellent insulation against the cold and wind, making it a handy accessory for anyone who is deep innawoods. Also, its got a pretty distinct look to it with it’s style of sewing, standing out from many similar styled ski masks surplus or otherwise.
Today, the East German wool balaclava has become a sought after item, with woodland operators and historical collectors from around the world seeking to acquire an original. While the balaclava is no longer in production, it would have served many if not all branches of the NVA (if the country hadn’t collapsed right before these were issued lol) and will serve you just as well, keeping you safe, snug and secure all through the winter!

Manufacturing
The East German wool balaclava was made from high-quality wool, which was sourced locally from the sheep that roamed the hills and mountains of the GDR. The wool was carefully selected for its durability, warmth, and ability to keep away moisture, ensuring that the wearer remained dry and comfortable even in the most extreme weather conditions.
AUTHENTIC NVA ISSUE SURPLUS
Field Notes/Misty Supply Musings/Potential Uses/Trivia
Balaclavas are awesome, but most off the shelf are acrylic - which will not be nearly as warm or good at wicking as these.
The DDR collapsed before these were issued, so these are fresh out of their packaging!
