Established by Congress in 2000, The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile; works to reduce the global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and militarily effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad. The National Nuclear Security Administration, also manages the Office of Secure Transportation (OST), responsible for the transport and protection of Nuclear warheads and other sensitive materials. They engage in counterrorism in nuclear threats overseas and assisting in securing oversea nuclear stockpiles of both United States assets and allies. Over two thousand three hundred heavily-armed protective forces provide security for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) at six different sites with long term missions to store and process weapons-grade nuclear materials, what is classified as one of America's highest security threats. Since September 11th 2001, DOE has sought to 

transform its protective forces into an elite tactical response fighting force similar to agencies with training and capabilities similar to the U.S. military.
