These mess kits were meant to replace the famous M-31. With a nesting design, it allowed soldiers to keep their canteen inside their mess kit as well as have their mess kit take up less space.
These kits are 3 pieces. The top, which has a handle for cooking or pouring, the base which is meant to be served out of (not applied to a flame) and the canteen. As the aluminum canteens are not always found with these kits now, they have been replaced with a plastic reproduction.
One of the best features of the mess kit is that it has a built in mechanism to keep it from rattling or coming open. Quiet and together. Lovely. Such small but important things. It also features a clip for attaching to webbing as well as a loop on the rear to attach to a belt.
Honestly, this is our go to for the field. It’s compact, ensures you have water on hand for cooking and it wont bend if you accidently step on it or crush it like a US canteen cup.
