USGI M81 Woodland Poncho Liner (Woobie)
Woobie. Seriously, who came up with that name?
Despite its age-old introduction during the 60s as the Vietnam war raged, the United States Army USGI M81 Woodland Poncho Liner, affectionately nicknamed the Woobie, can still be seen in use to this day by active members of the US military in every branch. Truly embodies the saying “if it ain't broke, don't fix it!” (Looking at you UCP…) Trusted by recruits making it through their first few nights on a training operation, to weathered veterans, this Woobie doesn’t have failure in its vocabulary. Doubling as a make-shift shelter in emergencies, a sun canopy under the beating sun, a pillow, a seat cover, a bed for lil puppy fido, portable camouflage, a blanket, a simple tent, or insulation for anything it can fit in, the possibilities are endless. If we listed them, you would be reading all day and we would likely lose our damn minds! All this being possible from its inception is even more amazing when you realize woobies were first created out of duckhunter camo WW2 lying in storage. Its name itself comes from the childish word for a feelgood blanket, from the movie Mr. Mom (1983), but you can call it blankie or whatever else you won’t admit out loud ;)
