In Vietnam, the United States recognized that solid colour uniforms were a thing of the past - so they brought out a pattern they had shelved in 1948 - ERDL. ERDL was issued to special forces in 1967 and later adopted by the United States Marine Corp in 1968. ERDL was divided into two patterns, Lowland and Highland. This was due to the difference of environments between Northern and Southern Vietnam. The Highland pattern is more brown dominant and Lowland is more green dominant. It is easy to see from this pattern how it was adapted into Woodland roughly 15 years later.
