A poncho is easily one of the lightest items you can carry that will be the difference between a good weekend and an absolute shit one. Ask me how I know.
This is easily remedied by washing the poncho by hand in warm water with mild soap and letting it air out.
DO NOT MACHINE WASH THESE PONCHOS.
