Field Notes/Misty Supply Musings/Potential Uses/Trivia
Over time, the durable water repellency (DWR) factor of British army bivvy bags will wear down. While the DWR isn’t responsible for determining waterproof elements of the bag, which is only achieved by the MVP (Moisture Vapour Permeable) layer, it is a final level of finish applied to the exterior of the bag. This finish causes water that comes in contact with the bag to “bead” and be repelled, and the lack of a layer of finish will lead to a term colloquially known as “wetting out”, which is when the MVP (Moisture Vapour Permeable) becomes saturated and overwhelmed by too much water. Have no fear! This problem can be solved through many guides in “reproofing” found online! Our best recommendation is the use of a chemical known as Nikwax “Tech Wash” manufactured specifically for use with Gore Tex fabrics, and luckily MVP is a clone of Gore Tex. (The solution can be applied much like detergent in your washing machine)
These are essentially the same as the much more expensive Snugpak bivouac bags, but without the price tag.
NOTE: Washing with detergent should be avoided at all costs! It can and likely will block the breathable membrane of the Bivy bag!
